Cover letter examples for Germany: six samples in English and German

Six complete cover letters for six different jobs. Matching CVs in German format are on our German CV examples page. Three are in English, three in German, because each one follows the language of its job ad. Each letter has three notes on why it works.

All people, companies, job ads and numbers in these examples are made up. The letters follow what university career services recommend: one page, three to five short paragraphs, a named contact person, concrete examples instead of a retold CV, and a salary figure only when the ad asks for one (KIT Career Service, LMU Jobline, LMU Career Service, retrieved 30 Oct 2026). Below you see the text. In the cover letter editor each letter opens in DIN 5008 layout, in the same design as the matching CV.

1. Software engineer, in English

Job ad: Senior Backend Engineer (Go), product team, written in English, reference SBE-114.

Tomasz Nowak · Leipzig · tomasz.nowak@example.com · +49 151 0000 0001

Ms Hanna Lindqvist · Head of Engineering · Spreewelle Mobility GmbH · Example Street 5 · 10115 Berlin

Leipzig, 30 October 2026

Application for Senior Backend Engineer (Go), reference SBE-114

Dear Ms Lindqvist,

Your ad asks for someone who can make a booking system fast under load. That is what I have done for the last three years at Reiseweit in Leipzig, where I rebuilt our booking API in Go and cut the average response time from 420 to 180 ms.

You also mention leading a small team. At Reiseweit I lead three engineers, run our code reviews and plan each release with product. Before that, I built the refund service at Zahlwerk Systems in Kraków, which 40 shops use, and introduced automated tests that halved our release errors.

I would like to bring this experience to Spreewelle, because your product solves a problem I know from the travel side: bookings that fail when traffic peaks. My German is good, so I can follow meetings in German, and I keep improving it.

I can start on 1 February 2027. I look forward to telling you more in an interview.

Best regards, signature

Enclosure: CV, certificates

Why this works in Germany

  1. The first sentence picks up the ad’s main requirement and answers it with a number.
  2. Each paragraph links one requirement to one example, as KIT recommends.
  3. The German level is mentioned once, honestly, because the team may speak German.

2. Data analyst, in English

Job ad: Data Analyst, logistics, written in English, contact named in the ad.

Priya Raman · Hamburg · priya.raman@example.com · +49 151 0000 0002

Mr Lukas Brandt · Team Lead Analytics · Elbtor Retail GmbH · Example Quay 12 · 20457 Hamburg

Hamburg, 30 October 2026

Application for Data Analyst, Supply Chain Analytics

Dear Mr Brandt,

I spent three and a half years planning stock for retail partners and have now spent almost three years turning that kind of data into dashboards. Your team works on exactly this link between operations and analysis, which is why I am applying.

At Hafenblick Logistik I built the weekly delivery dashboard in Power BI that 12 site managers now use every Monday. I also automated a manual report that used to take a full day each month. Before that, as a supply chain coordinator in Pune, I planned stock for 30 retail partners and started using SQL to find where deliveries were delayed.

You ask for SQL and Python. I use both daily and completed a certificate in data analysis in 2023 to build on my business degree.

I can start on 1 January 2027 and would be glad to show you one of my dashboards in an interview.

Best regards, signature

Enclosure: CV, certificates

Why this works in Germany

  1. The career change is explained in the first paragraph, so the reader doesn’t have to work it out.
  2. The results are specific (12 managers, one day a month) and match the CV.
  3. The offer to show a dashboard turns the closing into a concrete next step.

3. Mechanical engineer, in German

Job ad: Versuchsingenieur E-Antrieb, written in German.

This letter is in German because the ad is. English notes below.

Jonas Becker · Stuttgart · jonas.becker@example.com · +49 151 0000 0003

Frau Dr. Katrin Vogel · Leiterin Erprobung · Neckarstrom Automotive GmbH · Beispielweg 3 · 70173 Stuttgart

Stuttgart, 30. Oktober 2026

Bewerbung als Versuchsingenieur E-Antrieb

Sehr geehrte Frau Dr. Vogel,

Anlagen: Lebenslauf, Zeugnisse

Why this works in Germany

  1. The letter mirrors the ad’s wording (“Dauerläufe”, “E-Antrieb”), which helps both the recruiter and the applicant software.
  2. One result with a number is enough. The letter doesn’t repeat the whole CV.
  3. The German form of address uses the academic title, “Frau Dr. Vogel”, as is usual in German.

4. Marketing manager, in German

Job ad: Head of Marketing DACH, written in German, asks for salary expectations.

This letter is in German because the ad is. English notes below.

Sofia Moretti · München · sofia.moretti@example.com · +49 151 0000 0004

Herr Felix Hartmann · Geschäftsführer · Alpenwerk Software GmbH · Beispielstraße 20 · 80331 München

München, 30. Oktober 2026

Bewerbung als Head of Marketing DACH

Sehr geehrter Herr Hartmann,

Anlagen: Lebenslauf, Zeugnisse

Why this works in Germany

  1. The salary figure is there only because the ad asks for it, as KIT recommends.
  2. Team size, budget and growth show the level of responsibility in two sentences.
  3. The letter is written in German, which already shows that the German level on the CV is real.

5. Graduate, MSc, in English

Job ad: Junior Project Engineer, energy storage, written in English, no contact name.

Daniel Mensah · Aachen · daniel.mensah@example.com · +49 151 0000 0005

Human Resources · Rurtal Energy GmbH · Example Road 8 · 52062 Aachen

Aachen, 30 October 2026

Application for Junior Project Engineer, Energy Storage

Dear Sir or Madam,

In my master’s thesis at RWTH Aachen I calculated how much battery storage an onshore wind park needs. Your junior project engineer role works on these questions in real projects, and I would like to help build them.

During my studies I worked as a student assistant at the university’s institute for power systems, preparing grid simulation data in Python for two research projects. Before my master’s, I spent three years as a junior electrical engineer in Accra and helped plan three solar mini-grids. I know how much planning a small grid needs before anything is built.

My German is good (Goethe-Zertifikat B2), and I keep working on it, so I can join German-speaking project meetings.

I can start right away. I would be glad to present the results of my thesis in an interview.

Best regards, signature

Enclosure: CV, certificates, thesis summary

Why this works in Germany

  1. Without a contact name, the letter opens with “Dear Sir or Madam” and closes with “Best regards”, like every English letter on this page.
  2. The thesis comes first, because it is the closest thing to the job.
  3. Work before the master’s is used as proof of practice, not just listed.

6. Working student, in German

Job ad: Werkstudent (m/w/d) IT-Projektmanagement, 15 to 20 hours a week, written in German.

This letter is in German because the ad is. English notes below.

Mia Schulz · Köln · mia.schulz@example.com · +49 151 0000 0006

Frau Anna Krüger · Projektleitung IT · Domblick Medien GmbH · Beispielallee 1 · 50667 Köln

Köln, 30. Oktober 2026

Why this works in Germany

  1. Hours per week and start month are stated, because that is what the employer of a working student plans with.
  2. The student job shows a result, even though it is a support role.
  3. The letter is short. For a working student position, three short paragraphs are enough.

What German recruiters check A cover letter should explain briefly and concisely why you fit, by linking the requirements of the ad to your skills with concrete examples (KIT Career Service). It should not retell your CV but add something to it (LMU Career Service).

How to use an example

  1. Open the example closest to your situation.
  2. Paste your own job ad. Joblumi runs the language check and shows which language to write in.
  3. Let Joblumi draft the letter from your CV and the ad, or write it yourself. AI text is marked, so you can check it.
  4. Download it as PDF with a free account, or as Word with a pass.

Don’t send an example as it is. Recruiters can tell a generic letter from one written for their job.

See the must-haves and language level of your ad first.

Questions people ask

Should my cover letter be in English or German?

In the language of the job ad (LMU). That’s why three of the examples are in German.

Do I have to mention my salary expectations?

Only if the ad asks for them (KIT). Example 4 shows how to put it in one sentence. To see what a figure means after tax, use the net salary calculator.

What if there is no contact name in the ad?

Look on the company’s careers page first. If you can’t find a name, use “Dear Sir or Madam” or “Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren”, as in example 5.

How long should the letter be?

One page. All six examples are short enough for one page.
