When you need a CV in German

Apply in the language of the job ad. LMU Munich’s career service advises English for English-language ads and German for German-language ads (LMU Career Service, retrieved 31 Oct 2026). So the ad decides, not the company’s size or your field.

Two signs that you need a German version:

  • The ad is written in German. Then the recruiter expects your CV and cover letter in German, too.
  • The ad asks for a German level, for example “gute Deutschkenntnisse” or “Deutsch fließend”. A German CV is the first proof of that level the reader sees. Your CV should not promise more than you can show in the interview.

See which language and level an ad asks for.

If you apply to both kinds of jobs, keep two versions. The German CV builder creates both from the same data.

It’s not only about translation

A word-for-word translation of an English resume still looks foreign to a German reader. A German CV, the Lebenslauf, has its own format:

Rule What it means Source
Tabular Dates on the left, details on the right, in at most two columns LMU, KIT
Newest first Start with your current or latest job and work back Welcome Center RLP
Dates as MM/YYYY One date format everywhere, for example 03/2022 - 05/2024, or “seit 04/2021” for a current job LMU, KIT
One to two pages Two pages at most LMU, Bundesagentur für Arbeit
Language levels stated Every language with its level LMU, KIT
Place, date, signature Many German CVs end with Ort, Datum, Unterschrift Bundesagentur für Arbeit

All sources retrieved 31 Oct 2026.

Language levels after the CEFR

The usual scale in Europe is the CEFR (in German: GER, Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen) with six levels from A1 to C2 (TUM Language Center, retrieved 31 Oct 2026). KIT’s career service groups them as A1 and A2 for elementary use, B1 and B2 for independent use and C1 and C2 for competent use. It also suggests words instead of codes, such as “Englisch: fließend” rather than “Englisch C1”, because CV parsers read words more reliably (KIT Career Service, retrieved 31 Oct 2026). A safe way is both: “Deutsch: gute Kenntnisse (B2)”.

These are the words you will need most. The headings in bold are the ones the preview above uses.

One trap: Ausbildung can mean education in general or a vocational training. As a section heading it covers your whole education. For a training programme in a company, write Berufsausbildung so the reader doesn’t mix it up with a degree. The Bundesagentur für Arbeit’s own CV guide uses further headings such as Praktische Erfahrung and Besondere Kenntnisse (Bundesagentur für Arbeit, retrieved 31 Oct 2026). Both styles are fine. Pick one and keep it.

How to use the tool

  1. Upload your CV as PDF or Word.
  2. Wait a few seconds while Joblumi reads it.
  3. Read your profile and latest job in German.
  4. Click the button. The app takes over your CV, so you don’t upload it again.

Every AI text in Joblumi is marked as AI text. Our AI provider is Anthropic and doesn’t train on your data. If your CV has a photo, we leave the photo out when we send the CV to the AI.

Check before you send Read the German version line by line before it goes to an employer. Job titles, names of degrees and your language levels must be right, because the recruiter takes them as facts. If you have a German-speaking friend, ask them to read it too. Many university career services also offer a CV check, for example LMU’s career service (retrieved 31 Oct 2026).

Questions people ask

How do I translate my CV to German?

Upload it above to see your profile and latest job in German. For the whole CV, continue in the app with a pass. Then check job titles, degree names and language levels yourself.

Should my CV be in German or English?

Use the language of the job ad (LMU Career Service). An English ad gets an English CV, a German ad a German CV.

Do I need to translate my certificates too?

If your certificates or transcripts are neither in German nor English, the Welcome Center Rhineland-Palatinate advises adding a translation, so the company can assess your achievements (Welcome Center RLP, retrieved 31 Oct 2026).

How do I write my German level in a German CV?

Use a word and, if you like, the CEFR level, for example “Deutsch: gute Kenntnisse (B2)” (KIT). Write the level you can really use in an interview.

Is the German preview free?

Yes. The preview of your profile and latest job is free and needs no account. The whole CV in German needs a pass.
