Your net salary is your gross salary minus taxes and your share of social security.
Taxes
- Income tax (Lohnsteuer): calculated with the official 2026 programme of the Federal Ministry of Finance (letter of 12 Nov 2025). In 2026, the first €12,348 of taxable income is tax-free. The 42 % rate starts at €69,879, and the 45 % rate at €277,826 (§ 32a EStG). An employee allowance of €1,230 is already included (§ 9a EStG).
- Solidarity surcharge: 5.5 % of income tax, but only if your yearly income tax is above €20,350, or €40,700 for married couples taxed jointly (§ 3 SolZG). Just above this limit, it rises step by step. Most employees pay none.
- Church tax: a percentage of your income tax, 8 % in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and 9 % in the other states (church tax laws of the states, as applied by the BMF wage tax calculator, checked 31 Oct 2026).
Social security, your share in 2026
| Insurance | Total rate | You pay | Up to a monthly salary of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pension | 18.6 % | 9.3 % | €8,450 |
| Unemployment | 2.6 % | 1.3 % | €8,450 |
| Health (public) | 14.6 % plus the additional contribution of your fund | 7.3 % plus half the additional contribution | €5,812.50 |
| Long-term care | 3.6 % | 1.8 %, plus 0.6 % if you are 23 or older without children | €5,812.50 |
- The average additional contribution (Zusatzbeitrag) for public health insurance in 2026 is 2.9 % (BMG, BAnz AT 10.11.2025 B7). The calculator uses it unless you enter the rate of your own fund.
- From the second child under 25, your care contribution falls by 0.25 percentage points per child, up to the fifth child.
- In Saxony, you pay 0.5 percentage points more for care insurance (2.3 % instead of 1.8 %), and your employer pays less (§ 58 SGB XI).
- Above the monthly limits in the table, no further contributions are due on the part of your salary above the limit (Sozialversicherungs-Rechengrößenverordnung 2026).
- With private health insurance, you enter your monthly premium for health and care insurance and, if you know it, the part for basic cover shown on your insurer’s certificate. Your employer pays a subsidy of up to half, within a legal maximum (§ 257 SGB V), and the calculator takes it into account.
Example
Small salaries
If you earn up to €603 a month, the job is usually a minijob. Between €603.01 and €2,000 a month, you are in the transition range (Übergangsbereich, “Midijob”): your share of social security is calculated on a reduced amount and rises step by step up to €2,000 (Deutsche Rentenversicherung, 23 Feb 2026). In these ranges, your real deductions are lower than a regular calculation shows. For a monthly salary of €2,000 or less, the calculator therefore shows this note instead of a result.
2027
From 1 January 2027 new values apply. The federal cabinet decided on 7 October 2026, for example, to raise the pension limit to €8,850 a month and the health insurance limit to €6,375 a month. These values are expected, not yet official until the Bundesrat approves them. From 1 January 2027, the calculator uses the 2027 values and marks them as expected until they are official.
What this calculator can’t do
It calculates wage tax and contributions from your salary, the way your employer’s payroll does each month. It doesn’t know your tax return: allowances, deductions or refunds that come with your yearly tax return are not included. It doesn’t replace advice from a tax adviser.
Questions people ask
Which tax class am I in?
Single people without children are usually in class I, single parents in class II. Married couples and registered partners are in class IV by default and can choose III and V. Class VI applies to a second job. In 2026, tax classes III and V still exist.
Why is my payslip different?
Your payslip can include things the calculator doesn’t know: benefits in kind, a company pension, allowances registered with the tax office, or a different additional contribution of your health fund. Small differences can also come from rounding.
Does the calculator store my salary?
No. It runs in your browser, and your numbers are not sent to us unless you save a result. With a pass, you can keep a result next to a job on your board (“Compare this offer”).
Is this tax advice?
No. It is a calculation tool. Joblumi gives no legal or tax advice.
